Welsford takes down Grosvenor UKSPC; £100k Walsall up next

By Mad Harper

Law student Dan Welsford has finally done it ! Three years after finishing fifth in the High Roller, and two years after making the final of the Main Event, he has won the Grosvenor UK Student Poker Championship.

Grosvenor Poker continues the action – for players of all kinds, not just students! – with the £100k guarantee GUKPT Walsall Main Event, starting on Thursday.

Welsford defeated a 917-strong field to win the £6,420 first prize and a package for Las Vegas. Not bad for a £30 buy in! He now has close to $10k in live tournament winnings. The Grosvenor UK Student Poker Championship is held annually at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and is the biggest student poker festival nationwide.

Grosvenor Poker now continues the action with the £100k guarantee GUKPT Walsall. The festival started yesterday, with Day 1a of the Mini Main attracting 90 entries. The Main Event runs from Thursday, April 27 to Sunday, April 30. Among those competing will be Grosvenor-sponsored Joe Beevers and Jeff Kimber.

MainEventTravel.com now sponsors GUKPT’s all-in triangles so look out for them at GUKPT Walsall as well as GUKPT Reading from May 21-28

Scottish player Paul Green won the last GUKPT in Edinburgh for £17,500 after cutting a four-way deal. Green, a regular in Edinburgh events, now has over $100k in live tournament winnings. There were 227 entries in total, smashing the guarantee with a prize pool of £113,500. Sin Melin was the last woman standing, and finished ninth for £2,390.

2017 is the GUKPT’s 11th consecutive season and promises to provide another record breaking year with a packed schedule and £1.8 million in Main and Mini Main guarantees. There will be nine legs in total this year before the GUKPT Grand Final takes place at The Poker Room above the iconic Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London in November.
