Raoul Van Wersch Bags the Day 1a Chip Lead in the €500K GTD Battle of Malta Main Event Posted Friday 22nd April, 2022 at 04:15(UTC+2) by Jason Glatzer

The Battle of Malta Main Event kicked off in style at the InterContinental Conference Center and the Casino Malta by Olympic Casino with 324 entries getting in on the first of the five opening flights.

To put this into perspective, the last time the Battle of Malta Main Event was held in a live format, the event attracted just a few players more with 333 players entering the field. That event had a €1,000,000 guarantee and eventually attracted 4,657 entries to generate a €2,495,795 prize pool, whereas this year the guarantee was €500,000, and appears to be simply a placeholder with the guarantee almost certainly to be smashed.

The field was trimmed down to just 49 hopefuls, each already in the money to start Day 2 as each opening day plays down to just 15 percent of the field.

Thus far, Raoul Van Wersch (pictured above) is in the best spot after Day 1a after bagging a monstrous stack of 744,000 in chips. Van Wersch had a big stack throughout most of the day but it appeared that either Brian Calleja or Federico Petruzzelli would be the Day 1a chip leader before Van Wersch soared ahead near the end of the day.

Petruzzelli still managed to bag a top three stack with 321,000 in chips, only behind Van Wersch and Mariano D'aquilla, while Calleja dropped two pots near the end of the day to Van Wersch to finish at 210,000.

Other players finding a bag into Day 2 via Day 1a included Dominik French (317,500), Koen Meustege (245,500), Kevin Malone (199,000), Fang Shiyan (182,500), Mateusz Moolhuizen (148,000), The Chip Race co-host David Lappin (112,000), Nico Jaemstroem (91,000), and Tarmo Tammel (53,000).

Welcome to the €500K GTD Battle of Malta Main Event Posted Thursday 21st April, 2022 at 12:55(UTC+2) by Jason Glatzer

Welcome to the 2022 Battle of Malta at the Casino Malta by Olympic Casino and the InterContinental Hotel.

The festival features something for everyone with 25 action-packed events. Our coverage will focus on the highlight of the festival in the €500,000 guaranteed Battle of Malta €555 Main Event while sprinkling in updates about the side events.

The Main Event boasts five opening flights from April 21-24 with players kicking off the action with a healthy stack of 25,000 in chips. The first three flights feature 40-minute blind levels with the final two flights playing faster with 20-minute blind levels.

Players will have plenty of opportunities to build a monster stack with unlimited re-entries permitted during each of the five opening flights until the end of Level 10.

Each opening flight concludes when the field is trimmed down to 15 percent with all advancing players already in the money. Players can re-enter even if they bag a stack with the biggest stack moving forward.

Surviving opening flight players will then compete for three more days from April 24-26 until the 2022 winner is crowned.

The Main Event kicks off at 2 p.m. CEST. Stay tuned for updates, photos, and more throughout the 2022 Battle of Malta.

Brief History of the Battle of Malta

The festival has a long and storied tradition dating back to 2012 when Nicodemo Piccolo navigated through a field of 349 entries to win the first Battle of Malta Main Event title for €35,000.

The event grew each year until the COVID pandemic moved the event online at GGPoker in 2020 and 2021. Players are thrilled that the Battle of Malta has returned to its home to the majestic island of Malta for what promises to be another thrilling festival.
