Yorkshire grandad Hesp becomes national hero

John Hesp, the 64-year-old grandad from Bridlington who is enjoying a sensational run at this year’s WSOP, has become a national hero back in the UK.

 

The WSOP will be going “on tour” soon after the Main Event ends - with WSOP International Circuit events planned at the amazing Iguazu Falls in Argentina from August 2-8 and Rotterdam (August 25 to September 2).

 

Hesp, whose normally only plays poker in a weekly £10 tourney at his local casino in Hull, decided to compete at this year’s WSOP because it was on his “bucket list”. Now his progress in the event, which attracted 7,221 entries, has made national news in the UK – with the BBC, Daily Mail, Mirror and countless other media outlets all reporting on his extraordinary achievement.

 

Top pros have also been rooting for the affable Englishman including Phil Hellmuth (who took him out for dinner) and Daniel Negreanu who tweeted: “Oh my JOHN HESP I love it!!! He is having a blast and making great TV just two hands in“.

 

#TeamHesp!

Hesp isn’t on twitter (yet) but a dedicated fan page has now sprung up and the hashtag #TeamHesp is being used all over the twittersphere. Grosvenor Casinos Ambassador Joe Beevers tweeted: “So much better we don't have to wait until November to see #JohnHesp win the @WSOP ME and become World Champion. #NoNovemberNine #TeamHesp”

 

With just seven players left, Hesp is currently fourth in chips – and now guaranteed at least $1,425,000. Play resumes for Day 9 at 5.30pm (local time) today. The current chip leader is New Jersey native Scott Blumstein on 178,300,000. Also still in is Frenchman Antoine Saout who was third in 2009 for $3,479,670.

 

Hesp, who is now semi-retired from the business he owns renting out caravan holiday homes, has just £1,745 in recorded cashes to date – all of which have come in Napoleon’s £10 Sunday Rebuys.

 

As luck would have it, Hesp’s Uber driver, who has been railing him for days, is a former attorney who is now helping Hesp cement some lucrative deals  including sponsorship for the final with the WSOP’s online partner, 888poker. (We're guessing that Foul Fashion, who made the spectacular jacket Hesp is wearing  – borrowed from a friend – are probably getting their publicity for free.)
