WSOP prepares for biggest Main Event ever

By Mad Harper

After a 26-month absence owing to the global pandemic, the WSOP is going all-out for a spectacular live Series this Autumn with the Main Event set to be the biggest yet.

Players have been champing at the bit to get back to live poker and there are now less than 70 days until the start of the greatest poker festival on the planet. The real fun starts on October 1 on Opening Weekend with the first day of a brand new event. The title of the $5 million guarantee Hold’em tourney says it all and “The Reunion” is certainly going to be emotional with so many players seeing each other at the Rio for the first time in over two years.

The Series will run September 30 – November 23, featuring 88 gold bracelet events in total with buy-ins ranging from $400 to $250,000.

The Main Event

The $10,000 Main Event is a freezeout with four start flights to choose from - Day 1A on Thursday, November 4, Day 1B the next day, Day 1C on the Saturday and Day 1D on Sunday, November 7. The tournament will continue until a two-day Final Table gets underway on Tuesday, November 16. Players will get a 60,000 starting stack and those who make it through either of the first two starting flights (Day 1a and 1b) will combine on Monday, November 8, 2021 for Day 2a. Players who make it through from the other two starting flights (Day 1c and 1d) will combine on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 for Day 2b.

MainEventTravel CEO Fraser MacIntyre said: “This really is going to be a WSOP to remember. We’ve waited so long to play and to see each other again so I know the atmosphere at the Rio is going to be incredible. Some people are saying the Main Event could get more than 10,000 runners which would be quite amazing. What a thing to be part of!! To be honest, there’s really no words to describe how excited I am about getting back to Las Vegas.”

WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart said: “We’re preparing for a poker reunion all players can celebrate and we’re beyond thrilled to offer a complete schedule of can’t-miss events including all our flagships, and the variety players deserve.”

WSOP Vice President and Tournament Director, Jack Effel added: “The entire WSOP team is hard at work to ensure players have the absolute best experience possible.”

Other schedule highlights
The 2021 WSOP features long-running stalwarts such as The Millionaire Maker, Monster Stack, Double Stack, Colossus, and The Closer but a whole load of new tournaments are also planned. In addition to the $5 million guarantee “The Reunion”, there will also be a $1,000 Flip and Go on October 10. Presented by WSOP Official Online Partner GGPoker, this will see the popular online format galvanised into a live event for the first time. There will also be a whole load of freezeout events with buy-ins ranging from $500 to $5,000 on October 6, 13, 18, 21, and 24.

At the high roller end of things, a new $50k buy-in “Nosebleed PLO” tourney is now on the schedule and will be the WSOP’s highest-ever buy-in for a PLO tournament. A $25K Heads-Up Championship is also planned (on October 5) along with a $250,000 Super High Roller starting November 18, the largest non-charity event buy-in in WSOP history.

Last year’s pandemic-hit World Series of Poker ran almost entirely online. There were two separate Main Events – one in the States and another held internationally on GG Poker. Joseph Hebert turned a $300 satellite seat into a $1,553,256 payday to win the “Domestic Main Event” held in the US and Argentina’s Damian Salas won $1,550,969 in the “International Main Event”. Hebert and Salas then played each other in an epic 173-hands, live heads-up finale with Salas eventually snagging the WSOP Main Event champion title along with an additional $1 million and coveted gold bracelet.

The last winner of a “fully live” WSOP Main Event was Hossein Ensan from Germany who beat a 8,569-entry field to take down the 2019 tournament for $10,000,000.
